Brainy Camps 2018 Has A New Home

For years, it has been our dream to have our own campsite and we are finally ready to make that dream come true.   With the support of Children’s National, we have begun looking for property on which to build that will allow us to expand our camps and offer year-round programming to our campers.

Of course, it will take a few years to find the right setting, build the campsite and have it ready for use, so we have found ourselves an interim home starting this summer.   We have contracted with Blue Ridge School in St. George, VA, to host our camps in 2018 with plans to remain there until our campsite is ready for use.

To introduce you to our temporary home, Blue Ridge School (BRS) is a boarding school for boys, grades 9-12, located 20 miles from Charlottesville, VA, and 2 hours from Washington, DC.   The campus is comprised of 750 acres in a beatific setting that lies at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains.   The school has an outdoor athletic complex that includes an artificial turf football field, a six-lane track, 2 soccer fields and a baseball diamond.  Other outdoor activities include hiking, mountain biking, rock wall climbing, canoeing, swimming, low and high ropes challenges, and a zip line.  Indoor activities offer a theatre with stadium seating, 3 regulation basketball courts, a weight room and an art room equipped with spinning wheels and kiln.  The cafeteria offers several options for each meal and is able to accommodate special dietary needs.  The campers will sleep in dorm rooms that are big enough for 4—one being a counselor or CIT to ensure safety–and each dorm floor offers a meeting place for kids to hang out and socialize.  There is an infirmary on the grounds and we will most likely convert a couple classrooms into additional medical sites to accommodate our needs.

BRS is 30 minutes from Sentara East Rockingham Health Center, 40 minutes from UVA Children’s Hospital and 45 minutes from Sentara RMH Medical Center.  For our college basketball aficionados, you will be interested to know that our summer host at BRS is Cade Lemcke, a UVA graduate and past guard for the UVA Cavaliers from 1998-2000.

This is a very exciting time in the life of Brainy Camps, a time filled with many challenges as well as many wonderful dreams-come-true.  Please join with us as we begin the journey of making the Brainy Camps Campsite a reality.  We will be kicking off our “Imagine A Campsite” campaign in the very new future and would love your help!

Looking forward to a bright new beginning,

The Brainy Camps Crew
