The Brainy Camps Experience

Since 1994, Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) Camps, a.k.a. Brainy Camps, and its partners have offered children with chronic health conditions, illnesses and life challenges a unique opportunity to “just be a kid” by enjoying a week away at camp.  A week where they are the majoriy and are able to be who they are without fear or stigma.  A summer sleep-away camp where medical care is managed by experts, the staff is experienced and committed and the kids are surrounded by the support of other kids who share the same condition.

At Brainy Camps, everyone has an opportunity to participate in camp activities from riding the zip line and climbing the rock wall to yoga and camp performances, regardless of his or her condition. No one stands out because everyone, including 50% of the staff, has the same condition and understands the challenges of life. The social support is intense and most children leave camp with a new perspective on life and a new skill, whether it is swimming, dancing, or communicating as a member of a group.

Since the health institution is central for many of the children and their families, most camps that serve children with chronic health conditions and diseases try to establish relationships with local area hospitals. For Brainy Camps, through its association with Children’s National Medical Center, the camps offer a continuation of care, reducing the barriers between clinics, families, schools and community.

Our model encourages campers to grow, gain knowledge, and become strong self-advocates and leaders. Brainy Camps promotes kids helping kids and community service through volunteerism. Our systematic effort includes preparing camp leaders and staff from partner groups, community volunteers and our summer staff. All volunteers receive relevant information, training and awareness they need to participate and supervise effectively designed programs and activities.

Looking across all our partners, Brainy Camps engages over 200 volunteers each summer at camp and many others participate in fund-raising and support efforts. Joining together to recruit, train and employ volunteers has been an area of opportunity, challenge and success.

Brainy Camps also train healthcare professionals during their internships, residency, graduate, and undergraduate programs.
