A Fun, Supportive, and Empowering Environment for Children and Teens Who Are mildly and moderately Obese
Camp Healthy Habits offers children and teens that are mildly and moderately (ages 8-16) four days and three nights of summer fun, education, and social connections.
Camp Healthy Habits, developed by the Department of Pediatrics and the Obesity Clinic, at Children’s National Medical Center, is a new addition to Brainy Camps. The goal is to reduce the social isolation that is often associated with this condition, have lots of fun, increase the knowledge and understanding of our campers about their condition, and begin to develop good habits for healthy living. The camps provide opportunities for children and teens to work with professional staff and become better self-advocates and self-managers of their condition. Parents can feel comfortable that their children are under the care of trained and experienced doctors and nurses.
Condition specific camps have proven to be an effective way for children to learn more about their condition and to develop adaptive behaviors. At Brainy Camps, children learn from peers and adult volunteers who live effectively with the same health conditions and are offered hope for the future.
Campers participate and choose from activities including hiking, arts and crafts, canoeing, team sports, a low and high ropes confidence course, Camp Olympics, swimming, yoga and drama. Support groups and educational programs promote knowledge, skill development and social connections
At Camp Healthy Habits, children and teens gain a better understanding of their condition, strengths and self-worth.
All Brainy Camps are held at Massanetta Springs in Harrisonburg, VA.
