Camp 2017: August 6-9
Camp Heads Up offers children and teens with chronic headaches and migraines (ages 10-17) four days and three nights of summer fun, education, and social connections.
Condition specific camps have proven to be an effective way for children to learn more about their conditions and to develop adaptive behaviors. At Brainy Camps, children learn from peers and adult volunteers who live effectively with the same health conditions and are offered hope for the future.
Camp Heads Up was developed by Brainy Camps in conjunction with the Neurology Department of Children’s National Health System. In addition to fun, the goal of Camp Heads UP is to teach the attendees new ways to control the pain they experience, reduce the social isolation often associated with this condition and increase each camper’s knowledge and understanding of their headaches and migraines. The camp provides opportunities for the children and teens to work with professional staff and become better self-advocates and self-managers of their condition. Parents can feel comfortable that their children are under the care of trained and experienced doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals who are experts in the field.
Dr. Marc DiSabella, child neurologist specializing in the study and treatment of headaches and migraines at Children’s National, heads the camp’s medical team. Additional medical staff, including nurses, social workers, a physical therapist and psychologist, are on-site 24 hours a day and counselors are trained to deal with issues related to this condition.
Campers participate in a myriad of activities. Support groups and educational programs promote knowledge, skill development and social connections and campers gain a better understanding of their condition, strengths and self-worth.
The cost of Camp Heads Up is $600 for campers, $400 for counselors-in-training, and $500 for 1-on-1 assistants. A $20 fee is added for the camp canteen. Need based scholarships are available and monthly payment plans can be arranged. Please contact Brainy Camps at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
